APPEARANCES

Matthew 5:31-32
"It has also been said, 'Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice.' But I can guarantee that any man who divorces his wife for any reason other than unfaithfulness makes her look as though she has committed adultery. Whoever marries a woman divorced in this way makes himself look as though he has committed adultery.

There is some nearly circular thinking going on here. If a man divorces a woman who has committed adultery it appears to be okay. However, if he divorces a woman who hasn't committed adultery, it will appear that she has committed adultery. The woman will be shamed even though she is innocent. And then if an innocent man marries that innocent woman, he will appear to have committed adultery with her.
Now two innocent people have the appearance of having done something wrong. In the meantime, the man who unjustly divorsed his wife appears to be justified.

It's all about appearances. No wonder we are cautioned "Stop judging so that you will not be judged. Otherwise, you will be judged by the same standard you use to judge others. The standards you use for others will be applied to you." (Matthew 7:1-2)

"God does not see as humans see. Humans look at outward appearances, but the LORD looks into the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7b)
